NaNoWriMo 2010 progress!

Am I crazy? I think I must be, for I am undertaking the gargantuan task of participating in NaNoWriMo 2010! And now, so you may laugh at my lack of progress over the next month:

Good times.
Wow wait what? I'm back? I'm back! Yes indeed. It hath been over a year since I last showed my face in the Simming community, so what's new? Without going in to too many details, I've got a full time journalism job, moved out of home and am now living with my partner... oh, and my dad put some more RAM in my antiquated old computer so it can actually run my Sims games again! Hurrah! So I'm jacked up with TS3 and the Ambitions expansion pack, and I'm going to be playing a DITFT, since apparently that's what all the cool hip kids are doing these days.

It's a bit weird to be playing again, because so much has changed since I last played this game. For now I don't even know how to get CC working in game but bear with - I'll get there eventually.

Without further ado, I present to you...
I'm seeing bright lights, sillhouettes of knife fights and I see it all, I see it all...Collapse )

[incoherent babbling]

Okay so here's the thing. I'm going to China. China. Tomorrow. For a few days. As a journalist. All expenses paid. I can't even. What? Hi. I can't. even. I'm so dazed.

This morning, an email arrived from my old editor-in-residence from Wintec, saying he'd received a call this morning from someone asking him to go to Shanghai to cover a forum on the dairy industry, but he couldn't because he's off to the Cook Islands or something. So, he asked me if I'd like to go instead, since I've been writing for a rural publication. Short story, I rang up the contact person, and said yes. I'm flying to Shanghai tomorrow.

Now I have a whole bunch of stuff I need to organise - passports and visas and all - before tomorrow. This doesn't feel real. xD

Here it comes again!

Every time this meme comes around, I just can't help myself...

Step 1: Put your iPod/iTunes on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song or artist the lines come from.
Step 4:Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

Random music assortment ahead!Collapse )

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15c: Roots

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15c: Roots

Welcome to the final part of Chapter 15! We're at the thin end of the wedge now, chaps. Last time, Dibbler and Druellae found a secret basement filled with caged SporeBabies under McGraw's house, but were caught by McGraw before they could investigate properly. They were taken to McGraw's mysterious benefactor, who turned out to be their estranged uncle, Chrysoprase, who threatened the girls and generally acted in a slightly unhinged manner. McGraw, panicking, called The Watch, at which point Chrysoprase made good his escape, locking the door behind him. McGraw turned herself in, and that's just where we are now...

We shan't disappoint, they've paid for a scene and a scene they shall have indeed.Collapse )

A meme of Sims!

I can never resist a good meme, and I've never done a Simming one, so.
Dragged kicking and screaming from the journals of simsinthecity and wonderfulweirdo.

Simming meme of procrastination!Collapse )

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15b: Roots

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15b: Roots

Part two of chapter 15. Hey, I managed to update in under a month! That must be a record for me! Anyway, last time Cheery resolved to get to the bottom of the PlantSim mystery and inadvertently involved Dibbler and Druellae. The sisters broke in to McGraw's house and found a hidden door, and that's just where we left off...

I won't shiver in the cold, I won't let the shadows take their toll.Collapse )

Happy birthday, Marabeast!

I totally had this ready yesterday, and all lined up to post first thing this morning. Then we had the mother of all powercuts and I'm only getting round to it now, so...Cardity cardity card!Collapse )

And as a "birthday present", have the next chapter of Dragon Control. So that maybe I can avoid the wrath of the Marabeast this time. :D

Chapter 10, where shit gets real.Collapse )

A column about homeschooling.

I was asked to write an opinion piece for a homeschooling newsletter, talking about the experiences and difficulties I had and all that jazz. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, so I thought I'd chuck it on my LJ. Y'know, for laughs.

I've edited out all the sensitive information so it can come out from behind the f-lock, too. :)
You wouldn't have a word if I hadn't said it first.Collapse )

Life in the Birdhouse: An OWBC - [1.3]

Welcome back to Life in the Birdhouse where, as it happens, life is getting a lot more difficult! Feel free to point and laugh at my trials as I struggle my way through the coming chapters. I'll be honest - that's what I would be doing if I weren't me.

BTW, just FYI, I really like this photo. JSYK.

So last time, Bryn went on a date with his truwuv Lauren Marmite and got taken in by a scam involving the plight of the common syke bird. Fisticuffs, lulz and an engagement were had. Then there was a beach wedding, but that was the least awesome thing to happen that day as the Flying Magical Cake Plate put in an appearance.
Also, lullabies. Can't forget the lullabies.
TS2 hasn't been this challenging for me in a long time...Collapse )

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15a: Roots

A Discworldly Legacy - Chapter 15a: Roots

Recap: After being abandoned by his four children, Brutha's PlantSim half-brother Belafon started going into a self-destructive spiral, ending when Cheery and Brutha called by the house to find him on the brink of death. He had received a flyer from a company called "The Handy Vine" in the mail, at which point he gave up any hope of ever being treated as an equal. Cheery, who had suspicions concerning Belafon's daughter, Larkspur, decided to pay her cousin a visit.

That said, on with the story!

The root of all evil has been running my whole life.Collapse )
